Audi S8 Boosted by ABT

The Audi A8 series featuring the most powerful iteration of the brand's new 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine with a maximum output of 512-horsepower (520PS) and peak torque of 650 Nm (479.42 lb-ft) for a 0-100km/h (62mph) sprint time of 4.2 seconds.

Not too shabby - unless you ask ABT Sportsline founder Hans-Jürgen Abt who is a firm believer of pushing the performance boundaries.

The German tuner of all things related to the VW Group has prepared the AS8 package for the Audi sport limousine.

"For us, the new AS8 is the best of both worlds, that is, the best in terms of both comfort and acceleration and agility", says Abt. "After all, the AS8 has to meet our premium customers’ standards when it comes to performance and luxuriousness."

ABT was able to squeeze at least another 100 ponies and 130Nm from the bi-turbocharged V8 with final numbers pending.

Even so, the AS8 is rated at 612hp (620PS) and 780Nm (572 lb-ft) with the tuner quoting a 0-100km/h (62mph) sprint time of about 4.0 seconds, 0-200km/h (124mph) in 13 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 290km/h (180mph).

A lowering module for the air-suspension and a choice of alloy wheel designs in sizes 19- and 20-inches complete the upgrades.

2013 Range Rover SUV

Land Rover has come out with an official announcement detailing its bigger, lighter and more modern looking luxury SUV.

While many have and will continue to focus their attention on the sleek evolution of the Range Rover's traditional looks and the modernized interior that is influenced by the Evoque, it's what you don't see that truly makes the fourth generation of the British SUV stand out from its predecessors.

You see, the 2013 Range Rover features a new all-aluminium monocoque body structure that is 39 per cent lighter than the steel body in the outgoing model. In addition, there's an all-new aluminium front and rear chassis architecture.

These weight saving measures help the new Range Rover shed as much as 926lbs of 420kg over the outgoing model, depending on market and specifications.

For example, Land Rover tells us that the US specification model with the naturally-aspirated 5.0-liter V8 will be approximately 700lbs or 318kg lighter than the outgoing equivalent.

"This new aluminum platform delivers significant enhancements in performance and agility, along with an improvement in fuel economy and reduction in CO2 emissions," said Land Rover in a statement.

The luxury SUV also gets a completely re-engineered four-corner air suspension, which according to the company, "delivers flatter, more confident cornering abilities, with a natural and intuitive steering feel".

The all-wheel drive Range Rover debuts a next generation of the brand's Terrain Response system, which analyses the current driving conditions and automatically selects the most suitable vehicle settings for the terrain.

Land Rover hasn't revealed the vehicle's exterior dimensions yet, but says that the new model features a longer wheelbase and a significant 118mm (4.6 inches) boost in rear legroom. There's also an available two-seat Executive Class seating package, which the company claims to offer the "ultimate in rear-seat luxury".

For its motivation, the European market model will offer buyers three choices at launch including a refined supercharged V8 petrol engine, and the 3.0-liter TDV6 and 4.4-liter TDV8 diesel engines.
The only engine confirmed for launch in North America at this stage is a 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8.

All engines will drive through an eight-speed automatic transmission from ZF with the driver making the selection through a rotary knob positioned on the lower part of the center console.
The new Range Rover will be available for order from September, with first deliveries for North America scheduled for December and the rest of the world in early 2013.

More details on 2013 Range Rover including specifications and prices are expected to be announced during its world premiere at next month's Paris Moto Show.

Holden Commodore ClubSport and Maloo

The big story for the new model year is the re-introduction of the most affordable Commodore based V8 models, the ClubSport saloon and the Maloo ute, which is Aussie talk for a car-based utility vehicle (think Chevrolet El Camino).

Both models sit below their respective R8 level variants in terms of equipment missing out on HSV’s Enhanced Driver Interface (EDI) and in the case of the Maloo, the remote locking hard tonneau and performance sailplane as well, but do keep other goods such as the 20-inch wheels, performance seats, satellite navigation and Rear Park Assist with reversing camera.

The Clubsport and Maloo are both powered by HSV’s 6.2-liter LS3 V8 that delivers 425hp (317kW) and 550Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque with prices starting at AU$64,990 and AU$58,990 respectively for manual gearbox versions.

As part of the new model year lineup, maximum power for the ClubSport R8, Maloo R8 and ClubSport Tourer R8 increases to 436hp (325kW), while all cars get new 20-inch forged alloy wheels that replace the previous 19-inch rims, and standard leather instead of cloth seats.
New available factory-fitted options include the 20-inch SV Performance Forged wheels in Gloss Black, “Vector” hood scoops and side vents and specifically for the Maloo R8, a new 6-piston brake package.

The Senator also gains the upgraded 436hp (325kW) V8 engine along with new 20-inch forged allow wheels in Dark Stainless, and Side Blind Zone Alert as standard, while it can be optioned with HSV’s 6 piston brake package.

Finally, as part of the company's celebrations, all MY12.5 models will feature unique “25th Anniversary” content such as new HSV 25th Anniversary “start-up” screen, build plate, internal I.D. plate and sill plates.

"25 years is an important milestone for our company, and we will be looking to celebrate in many ways through the course of the year," said HSV Managing Director, Phil Harding. "From a customer perspective; however, it is the product that matters so we have been working hard to deliver even more value across our range."

All MY12.5 HSV cars are available for sale in Australia now.
