Golf SportWagen Alltrack

Volkswagen is already the only place to get an affordable wagon in this country, and the 2017 Golf SportWagen Alltrack answers the prayers of many with all-wheel drive.

Last month, Automotive News ran a story about a Connecticut VW dealer, one of the oldest in the U.S., that was shutting down. Slumping sales and a lack of cash were the cause, but definitely brought on by the fact VW was competing in an area demanding crossovers and all-wheel drive.

It's why Subarus do so well in the Northeast. Forget debating whether it's sensible to have AWD when you only really need it a few days out of the year. In the northeast states, it's what drives many car purchases.

The Alltrack won't sell in Outback (or probably even Impreza) numbers, but it stands to put VW back on the shopping list for a lot of people. The Golf wagon itself is such an immensely practical vehicle, too, and it feels like a truly quality product. It has a prestige image that Subaru lacks, which is likely going to make it really popular in certain towns. And yet it shouldn't be nearly as pricey as a Volvo XC70, V60 Cross Country or Audi Allroad.

And I kind of like the way it looks. I'm not usually a fan of jacked-up wagons, but the Alltrack wears its added height and car-version of hiking boots well.

So if you live in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire or Maine, prepare to get in line.

VW Golf on Top European Car Market

If you're in the market for a brand new car and you live in Europe, odds are, you're just going to make traffic even worse by the end of the year.

But that's a good thing, mostly. It's good for the car manufacturers and it's good for those who are obviously doing better financially, allowing them to afford buying new instead of used.

Compared to the same month last year, new car sales in February 2015 were up 7.8% according to JATO Dynamics and their analysis on new car sales. If we add this up to the rise we've seen in January, it would mean that the market is already ahead by 7.1% compared to 2014.

As of right now, Europe's best selling brands are Volkswagen, Renault and Ford (for the month of February). TheGolf holds a strong lead with sales up 5.8% last month, while the Polo holds down second place ahead of the Renault Clio.

Speaking of Renault, they took 2nd place away from Ford thanks to the Clio being a massive hit - mostly because of its looks. Otherwise there would be no reason why Renault should be outselling Ford in any capacity.

The Fiesta is however the 4th best-selling model in Europe, while the attractive Peugeot 208 is 5th, ahead of the new Opel/Vauxhall Corsa.

The all-new Passat is also looking strong, quite strong when you think about the fact that it's selling at a pace which basically matches what cars from the supermini segment are doing. It's 63.8% rise compared to its predecessor last year makes it the most improved performer among the top 10 models.

VW Golf Mk1 Makes Yamaha R1 Look Painfully Slow

For anyone not in the know, the Yamaha R1 is one helluva fast sports bike, so it would take a very special car to beat it on the road.

While this first generation VW Golf looks fairly normal sans the bigger wheels, the truth couldn't be any more different; it has a highly-modified 2.0-liter turbocharged engine pushing out a mind-numbing 1,056PS (1,042hp) and 1,001Nm (738 lb-ft) of peak torque!

And if that's not enough, it was also fitted with a VW-sourced 4MOTION all-wheel drive system paired to a special six-speed manual gearbox.

It truly is a beast and is no match, even for an 182PS (180hp) Yamaha R1, as you will soon discover for yourself in the following video.

VW Golf Mk1 736Hp

The car in the video is a first generation Golf, which is not nearly as innocent as the above photo would have you believe. It packs a turbocharged 2.0-liter 16V engine, which puts out 736 Hp. All of that oomph is sent to the front wheels, via a six-speed manual gearbox.
The car also comes with a very sturdy-looking racing roll-cage, which will do little if something goes wrong at triple digit speeds.

Its 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time is not specified by Boba Motoring, the creators of this mad Golf, but since it is a front-wheel drive car with far too much power, we're guessing first gear is useless at full throttle.

They do say it gets from 100 to 200 km/h (62 to 124 mph) in 5 seconds. To put that into perspective, the Porsche Panamera Turbo S achieves the feat in 8.1 seconds, while not even a Veyron can match this Golf – the Bugatti takes 5.8 seconds…

VW Golf GTI Mk6 Last Edition

German tuning brand of all things related to the VW Group, ABT Sportsline, introduced a "Last Edition" version of the current Golf GTI Mk6 at the Essen Motor Show, which runs until December 9.

The ABT VW Golf GTI Last Edition is offered in two flavors as far as power is concerned, a base model with a reprogrammed ECU that lifts the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine's output from 211PS (208hp) to 260PS (256hp), and a stage II version gaining a new turbocharger with 310PS (306hp).

The GTI also gets a sports suspension that lower's the ride height by 25mm (1 inch) with the 310PS model gaining a new braking system with 345mm discs as well.

ABT Sportsline rounds out the package with cosmetic touches in the form of an aero kit with a front apron that includes a lip spoiler and LED daytime running lights, side skirts, a rear diffuser with a diagonal 4-pipe exhaust system and a roof spoiler, all of which feature red accents, plus new alloy wheels and red splash decals on the body.

Last but not least, ABT said that it will offer the final edition Golf GTI package at "special" prices, without providing specific MSRPs.

Sportska elegancija karakterizira dizajn eksterijera, kao i eneterijera, u kojem su uptrijebljeni materijali visokog kvaliteta uz, za Volkswagen, tradicionalno "pedantnu" završnu obradu.

2014 Volkswagen Golf Tuning

German car magazine Autobild was able to get an early look at what three renowned VW Group tuners are reading for the new Golf hatchback with preliminary renderings and in the case of ABT, some initial details on the performance packages.

We will begin with ABT Sportline that will offer a styling kit comprising a front apron, a new grille, headlamp accents, mirror caps, side skirts, rear apron and diffuser combo together with quad exhaust pipes, plus what looks like a tailgate décor strip and, of course, a selection of wheels and a lowering kit.

Under the hood, the tuning house will optimize the electronics for the new Golf's engines. The base 1.2-liter TSI petrol is boosted from 84hp (85PS) – yes, VW does offer such a low output unit on the Golf- to 104hp (105PS) and the 1.4-liter TSI petrol from 138hp (140PS) to 163hp (165PS).

On the diesel front, the 1.6-liter TDI diesel is lifted from 104hp (105PS) to 123hp (125PS), the 2.0-liter TDI from 148hp (150PS) to 178hp (180PS) and the stronger version of the same engine, from 181hp (184PS) to 207hp (210PS).

Next up on our list of tuners is Oettinger, which is working on a more aggressive looking body kit with new front and rear bumpers, chunky side skirts, a rear diffuser, a roof spoiler, a GTI-like front grille with red accents and larger alloy wheels.

We won't get to know the full details on Oettinger's engine program until early next year, but the company did reveal that the 1.4-liter TSI will be modified to deliver up to 250-horsepower.
There's nothing wild about Bavarian aftermarket firm MTM's subtle styling kit that includes a rear apron, wheels in sizes up to 20-inches and exhaust pipes. The tuner said it will also develop power kits for the new Golf with details to be released at a later date.
