G-Power BMW M550d With 435 HP

The BMW M550d is one heck of a long distance cruiser. However, what surprises you about it most is its monster torque output and M-like agility. And yet, it has nothing on this 'Hurricane'.

One would think that at 381 hp and 740 Nm of torque you're pretty much set if you're looking for a wickedly fast diesel-powered BMW 5 Series. Of course, if a fast diesel is all you want, most of you will be quite happy even with a 530d.

The goal of the M550d is to take things a lot further, straight into M Division territory. The M550d looks, feels and handles about as good as a proper M5. It may not go as fast in certain situations, but considering the fact that you get all that torque as well as excellent fuel consumption, we think there shouldn't be any complaints.

Unless of course you work for G-Power and you figure you might as well take the M550d and oh say light a fire under it so that it now produces 435 HP and an awesome 850 Nm (625 lb-ft) of peak torque - all dyno-tested.

G-Power are using their D-Tronik 5 V1 module in order to keep the M550d in check and we must say, it all sounds rather clever. The module is set up so that it only releases additional power if the correct cooling water temperature has been reached.

In extreme situations, if the oil temperature reaches its limits, the power output is reduced to stock.

As for traffic situations, the D-Tronik 5 module can correspond to the actual accelerator level, which is a very German way of saying that it will basically "mold" to your right foot and once again, revert the power to stock while driving slowly.

But when you want that extra available power, it will be instantly made available to you, giving you the pleasure of accelerating from 0 to 100km/h in just 4.5 seconds (0.2 seconds faster than a stock M550d and 0.2 seconds slower than an M5, but with so much more torque).

Your top speed will be 270 km/h, but you can get that electronic limiter lifted and blast your way to 300 km/h (186 mph).

Looks-wise, you've got your 21" G-Power Hurricane RR forged wheels, wearing 255/30 ZR21 and 295/25 ZR21 tires. The wheels have a double spoke design which we obviously like, and thanks to the use of lightweight aerospace aluminum (that sounds so cool doesn't it?), they're among the lightest wheels in their class.

All things considered, this thing might just be a 'best buy' if you're in the market for an ultra-fast German Wagon. Rivals such as the E63 AMG 4MATIC Estate and the Audi RS6 are quicker off the line but they're down on torque and most important, they're not helping you out with fuel in any way.

The best thing about the M550d, be it a factory model or a G-Power version, is that if you're somehow able to purchase one, you'll actually be able to easily live with its fuel consumption.

BMW M550d xDrive Sedan

The M550d is powered by BMW's new 3.0-liter inline-six diesel that features no less than three turbochargers, including two smaller and a larger unit.

The numbers speak for themselves: 381HP, 740Nm (546 lb-ft) of torque at just 2,000 rpm are more than adequate for a 4.7 seconds sprint from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) – just 0.3 seconds slower than the M5.

Being a diesel, the performance and the standard four-wheel drive system of the M550d do not come with a large penalty at the pumps, as the sedan's average fuel consumption is just 6.3 lt/100 km (37.3 mpg US).

Following an earlier announcement, today the Munich-based company published the first non-studio shots of the M550d xDrive.

BMW M550d, X5 M50d and X6 M50d, All Powered by a Tri-Turbo Diesel

The new models are the M550d xDrive sedan, M550d xDrive Touring, X5 M50d and X6 M50d, and as their names suggest, they're all powered by the same diesel engine and feature the Bavarian firm's xDrive all-wheel drive system.

And before you get your hopes high, we'd better tell you that none of them are planned for the US market.

BMW's M Performance Automobiles sub-brand was created to offer a diverse lineup of models with a wide choice of engines including diesels not only to compete with Audi's S range, but as we reckon, also to avoid further dilution of the M division.

The four introductory models debut a new 3.0-liter inline-six diesel with three-turbochargers delivering 381-horsepower and a whopping 740Nm (546 lb-ft) of peak torque, all of which the driver will find on tap as low down as 2,000 rpm.

This is the first time that a BMW engine employs the use of three turbochargers. The system comprises two comparatively small turbochargers and one large turbo, which join forces to deliver the amount of power required by the driver.

BMW has also fitted all models with a system that imitates the engine sound in the interior through the audio system.

"The system’s digital signal processing technology exchanges data directly with the engine management, allowing it to base its precise transmission of the engine’s timbre on the revs at any one time, the amount of torque being produced and the car’s speed over the road," says BMW.

An eight-speed Sports automatic gearbox and BMW's all-wheel-drive system, tuned to suit each individual model, transfer power to the road.

In terms of performance, the M550d xDrive sedan is the fastest hitting 100km/h (62mph) from standstill in 4.7 seconds while consuming 6.3lt/100km on average (37.3mpg US or 44.8mpg UK). Note that the fuel consumptions listed in the chart below are in Imperial mpg (aka UK) and not U.S. mpg figures.

All four models benefit from modifications to the chassis components, including M-specific tuning of the suspension, bodyshell mounting, engine and transmission mounting, springs and dampers, all standard and optional chassis control systems, and the Servotronic mapping for the hydraulic steering.

In addition, the 5-Series based models ride on 19-inch wheels, while the X5 and X6 (seen here in its facelifted form, more on that later) on 20-inch alloys.

Each model series gets a bespoke aero package, which includes new front and rear bumpers, a roof or a boot-lid spoiler and conspicuously Audi-like gray trim for the exterior mirrors.

Inside, the M Performance versions of the 5, X5 and X6 models get sports seats in black or dark grey upholstery with contrast stitching and embossed M logo, an M leather steering wheel with gearshift paddles, BMW Individual roof liner in Anthracite and interior trim strips in Brushed Aluminium Shadow (X5/X6) or Aluminium Hexagon (5er).

The European launch of all four cars is set for April. Below you'll find the selling prices (including 19% VAT) in Germany:
