Mercedes GLE Coupe

I accept that these four-door SUV "coupes" exist now, but I haven't come around to them. Still, I ended up liking the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe more than I expected to at the Detroit Auto Show.

And now that its upright sibling, the facelifted M-Class now known as the Mercedes-Benz GLE, has been shown in New York, I firmly believe the GLE Coupe is the right way to go if you absolutely have to have a GLE.

What was once a perfectly bland-looking front on the M has been given a swollen new face in the GLE transformation. And yet the rest of the car remains as conservative as ever. It's underwhelming, to say the least.

The 2016 Lexus RX also made a transformation from bland to... less bland at the New York Auto Show, but it did so in a more cohesive way. I can't believe I'm saying I like the new RX and its giant faces more than this Mercedes.

The GLE550e plug-in hybrid has issues other than its contrived name. Because of the addition of a big battery to what's essentially an old M-Class, there's a significant compromise to the cargo area. While there's a lot of space left, there's essentially a large suitcase permanently fixed to the cargo floor. A Volvo XC90 T8 plug-in will do this better, and with two extra seats, too.

Despite its faster roofline and sloping rear, the GLE Coupe isn't cramped inside. It has four totally usable seats and still probably manages more space for actual things than the GLEe. And the slightly more intimate driving position makes the GLE's interior feel a bit more special. For a luxury SUV that costs more than $50,000, the GLE Coupe feels special in a way the GLE doesn't.

But hey, if you're put off by the sharp turn the Lexus RX has made, you'd probably welcome a regular GLE. I'm sure Mercedes is smarter than all of us.

BMW M GT

Does BMW need another sports coupe in its range?

That's probably too general of a question to answer with a simple yes or a no, as it doesn’t specify the size of the car, pricing and where exactly would the engine be mounted.

That brings us to the BMW M GT design study made by Idries Noah. The South African automotive designer sent us this rendering with the note "thought you guys might find this interesting…", which we certainly do, but he didn't give us any other intel on the car and what was the idea behind its creation.

Obviously, the engine is mounted up front, so depending on how big it is, it could be a draft for a 6-Series replacement or perhaps something more upscale, like a Mercedes-AMG GT competitor

Take a look at it and give us your two cents.

Audi Prologue Avant

The Prologue Avant Concept from Audi gives us an idea of how the brand's new styling language can be applied on a more practical five-door body that blurs the lines between hatchbacks and estates. Mercedes would call this body style a Shooting Brake, in case you were wondering.

To be revealed at next week's Geneva Motor Show, the Prologue Avant study is a follow up to last year's Prologue Coupe from the LA Motor Show, with both models featuring the same design and similar footprint.

Speaking of dimensions, at 5,110mm (201.2 in) long, 1,970mm (77.6 in) wide and 1,400mm (55.1 in) tall, the Prologue Avant is only a tad longer (10mm or 0.4 in), wider (20mm or 0.8 in) and taller (10mm or 0.4 in) than the Coupe, with which it shares a 2,990mm (117.8 in) wheelbase.

“With our show car for Geneva, we now translate the design language of the Audi prologue into a new, dynamic and stretched form. We are merging it with a concept of high variability”, said Audi Board Member Ulrich Hackenberg.

Inside, the Avant has individual seats for four passengers and sports a modern dashboard design that does away with button-clutter featuring a new control concept with three touch displays.

Under the sheetmetal, Audi continues to experiment with different powertrains for the Prologue series. Whereas the LA show car had a 605PS (597hp) 4.0-liter turbo V8 and the following updated grey-colored versionof the coupe a 677PS (668hp) hybrid drivetrain combining the same V8 turbo with an electric motor, the Avant borrows the plug‑in hybrid drive from the Q7 e‑tron quattro.

This production unit pairs a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 TDI diesel to an electric motor to produce a system output of 455PS (449hp) allowing the Avant Concept to sprint to 100km/h (62mph) in 5.1 seconds.

According to the NEDC standard for plug-in hybrid vehicles, the Prologue Avant consumers 1.6 l/100km (147.0 US mpg) corresponding to 43g/km of CO2. Audi says the lithium-ion battery pack in the rear offers a pure electric driving range of 54 kilometers or about 34 miles.

Elsewhere, the chassis features an air suspension with adaptive dampers and Audi's dynamic all‑wheel‑drive steering system.

VW Sport Coupe Concept GTE

The Sport Coupe GTE from VW isn't just another flight of fantasy, but a car believed to preview the firm's next four-door coupe model in the mid-size category.

From the more snazzy styling to the grander exterior dimensions and the advanced tech, it looks like VW wants to push it above the current CC and closer to other premium sports saloons like the Mercedes-Benz CLS and Audi A7 Sportback – albeit not too close in pricing.

VW itself said that it portrays a styling exercise for a new model to bridge the gap between the Euro Passat and the Phaeton

At 4,869mm (191.7 inches) long 1,407mm (55.4 inches) tall and 1,864mm (73.4 inches) wide, the Sport Coupe is longer and wider than the current Passat, while riding on a 50mm longer wheelbase at 2,841 mm (111.9 inches) for improved rear legroom - Note: VW's US press arm mistakenly noted that the wheelbase was 118.9 inches or 3,020mm, something we repeated in our original article on the study.

For power, VW chose a 295hp 3.0-liter V6 turbocharged gasoline engine that operates in combination with two electric motors, one in the gearbox housing and the other at the rear, delivering a system output of 274hp (380PS), good enough for a 0-100km/h (62mph) sprint in 5.0 seconds and a 250km/h (155mph) top speed.

The GTE can run on battery power for 50km (31 miles) and has an overall range of around 1,000km or about 620 miles, returning a combined efficiency of 2l/100km (117.6 mpg US or 141.2 mpg UK).
