Seven Concepts for the Easter Jeep Safari

As it does each year, Jeep has presented its lineup for the Easter Jeep Safari extravaganza (March 28-April 5). The star among the seven concept vehicles that have just been unveiled is without a doubt the Jeep Chief study, which is inspired by the classic, original Cherokee and by the west coast surfer lifestyle.

Based on the Wrangler, the concept vehicle features custom exterior design cues such as the vintage Ocean Blue exterior color scheme with a white, French Bread roof, custom modified razor grille made famous by the original Wagoneer, removable sides and classic 17-inch slotted mag wheels. The study also features a Hawaiian themed interior.

Another striking concept is the Jeep Staff Car, an homage to legendary Jeep military service vehicles. The open-air Wrangler 4-door-based study combines rugged functionality with heritage design cues, including basic steel wheels, minimalist fender flares, “hungry horse” stretched canvas roof and bench seats.

Next is the Jeep Wrangler Africa, described as the ultimate Wrangler for back-country and overland expeditions. With room for extra gear and auxiliary fuel tanks, the study sports a Desert Tan exterior paint, a high-clearance steel front bumper with winch, power step rock rails, power dome vented hood and an extended rear body and high-top roof.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee Overlander was customized for enthusiasts interested in overland expeditions where they travel and camp out of their vehicle, as the hard-shell rooftop tent demonstrates.

The Jeep Renegade wasn’t forgotten either, with the automaker presenting the Desert Hawk study, which is equipped with a selection of Mopar and Jeep Performance Parts for the “ultimate desert adventure.”

The Jeep Cherokee Canyon Trail was designed more off-road prowess and is equipped with JPP off-road rock rails, a two-piece fuel tank skid plate, two-piece underbody skid plate, oil pan and front suspension skid plates, as well as concept 17-inch painted wheels with BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A tires.

Finally, the Jeep Wrangler Red Rock Responder is a support vehicle purpose-built to traverse the world’s harshest terrain with premium off-road equipment to respond to any vehicle emergency. The cargo boxes on each side hold a hi lift jack and accessories, fire extinguisher, road side accessory kit, first aid kit, Snap-on tool soft bags and recovery kit. The vehicle also stores an air hose and accessories, a dual compressor and air reservoir and has room for a cooler or a case of water.

Fiat 500X SUV

Mirafiori was rumored to face the axe, a move that would probably reduce Fiat’s €700 million expected loss this year. However, the plant won’t be shut down but it won’t get to assemble the two small SUVs that the company is getting ready, either.

These two models, the Fiat 500X and the related Jeep-badged small crossover will almost certainly be built at the Melfi plant, which will be the “hub” for both brands’ future B-segment cars.

Marchionne is reportedly hard at work to re-establish the failing Fiat brand image in the European market.

To do so, he is said to be considering a new stand-alone brand based around the successful 500 city car and its derivatives, much like BMW did with the MINI.

The newspaper also reports that the next Lancia Delta will be assembled in the Cassino factory, as will its Chrysler 100 twin that will be exported to the U.S.

2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel in U.S.

The German company isn't the only automaker with plans to sell a diesel-powered SUV in the States.

The Chrysler Group announced today that it would add a diesel version to its Jeep Grand Cherokee lineup in the United States and Canada. The North American diesel model will be manufactured at the firm's Jefferson North Assembly Plant [JNAP] in Detroit.

In addition, Chrysler revealed that it would add a third crew and 1,100 new jobs at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant next year. Current employment at the plant is approximately 2,890 workers.
"We believe that investing in Detroit is not only the right thing to do, but it is a smart thing to do as we work to write the next chapter in our shared history," said Chrysler Group Chairman and CEO Sergio Marchionne.

The automaker did not divulge any more details but there's a good chance that the North American market Grand Cherokee Diesel will be offered with the same engine as its European counterpart.

The latter is powered by a 3.0-liter V6 CRD common-rail turbo diesel available in two states of tune delivering 190HP at 4,000rpm and 440Nm (324.5 lb-ft) at 1,600-2,800rpm, and 241HP at 4,000rpm and 550Nm (405.7 lb-ft) at 1,800-2,800rpm. Both versions of the V6 are matted to a five-speed automatic transmission.

The 190HP model accelerates from zero to 100km/h (62mph) in 10.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 191km/h (119mph) while returning a combined fuel consumption of 8.3 lt/100km (28.4mpg) in the European cycle.

The more potent 241HP variant goes from 0 to 100km/h (62mph) in 8.2 seconds en route to a top speed of 202km/h (126mph) but returns the same fuel economy at 8.3 lt/100km (28.4mpg).

Jeep Wrangler Ultimate with 392 HEMI

Nothing is official, but the Wrangler was reportedly outfitted with the 6.4-liter HEMI V8 that produces 470 hp (350 kW / 477 PS) and 470 lb-ft (637 Nm) of torque. This, as you're probably aware, is the same engine that will be used in the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 which is slated to be unveiled at the New York Auto Show.

We're not getting our hopes up, but Jeep is no stranger to stuffing HEMIs into Wranglers. Back in 2007, the company dropped a 6.4-liter HEMI V8 into a Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon to create the Wrangler Ultimate concept for the SEMA Motor Show.
