1911 Fiat S76 and its 28.3-Liter Engine

Back at the dawn of the motor car, there was genuinely was no replacement for displacement, as this slightly scary 1911 Fiat S76 proves. The car you see here is actually running for the first time in 100 years, after having undergone a 10-year-long restoration process.

The car nicknamed the “Turin Beast” was originally aimed to be speed record machine, a role which it more than fulfilled thanks to its 28.3-liter engine that had ~290 PS and could propel the 1,650 kg / 3,637 lbs vehicle up to 290 km/h or 180 mph.

It was never clocked that fast, though, managing to average just under 140 mph or 225 km/h within the constraints of the two run system, which requires the car to have a go in each direction then calculate the average.

This particular car was apparently dismantled after the First World War, so as not to fall into enemy hands, and in 2003 the chassis made its way to the UK, in the hands of its owner and enthusiast engineer, Duncan Pittaway - see him start the car here for the very first time!

The car is now fully operational and really rather spectacular to see in action, as you’ll find out for yourself in the video posted below.

Fiat 500X SUV

Mirafiori was rumored to face the axe, a move that would probably reduce Fiat’s €700 million expected loss this year. However, the plant won’t be shut down but it won’t get to assemble the two small SUVs that the company is getting ready, either.

These two models, the Fiat 500X and the related Jeep-badged small crossover will almost certainly be built at the Melfi plant, which will be the “hub” for both brands’ future B-segment cars.

Marchionne is reportedly hard at work to re-establish the failing Fiat brand image in the European market.

To do so, he is said to be considering a new stand-alone brand based around the successful 500 city car and its derivatives, much like BMW did with the MINI.

The newspaper also reports that the next Lancia Delta will be assembled in the Cassino factory, as will its Chrysler 100 twin that will be exported to the U.S.

2012 Fiat Punto

Perhaps the most important update for 2012 concerns the addition of the 85HP 0.8-liter two-cylinder TwinAir turbocharged gasoline engine. In addition, Fiat’s engineers have added two new technologies to the 85HP 1.3-liter MultiJet 2 diesel engine, the Intelligent Alternator and Intelligent Flow, both of which help lower CO2 emissions to 90g/km.

The 2012 Punto is distinguished by its body-colored bumpers, the new indicators positioned alongside the air intake, different alloy wheel designs and three new metallic colors including Glam Rock Blue, Tip Tap Red and Blues Grey.

Additionally, the TwinAir versions get a new trim level that sports an exclusive “Energetico Green” color and an optional glossy black roof. As for the interior, there are only some minor updates such as the new colors and materials on the seats.

2012 Fiat Strada Pickup Truck

The Strada is Fiat's second best-selling commercial vehicle after the Ducato with 127,800 units sold worldwide in 2011. It is built at the company's FIASA plant in Betim, Brazil.

The revised light commercial model comes in three flavors named Working, Trekking and Adventure plus three body styles, including short cab, long cab and the four-seater crew cab for a total of six different variants.

The most distinct model is the Adventure crew cab with its 4x4-esque looks thanks to a raised suspension and extensive body cladding. This version also features a new standard electronic locking differential called E-Locker and 205/65 R15 off-road tires.

Fiat says that the new Strada's overall dimensions are unchanged over the previous series with a length of 4,409 mm (4,457 mm for the Adventure), a width of 1,664mm (1,740mm for the Adventure) and a common wheelbase for all versions of 2,718mm.

The payload, including the driver, ranges from 630kg to 705 kg (1,388 to 1,555 pounds) depending on the version.

Power comes courtesy of a 1.3-liter Multijet 16v Euro5 diesel engine that delivers 95-horsepower and 200Nm (147.5 lb-ft) at 1,500 rpm and consumes 5.3lt/100km (44.4 mpg US) on the combined European driving cycle.

In Italy, prices before tax range from €12,900 (US$16,700) for the Working Single Cab model to €16,000 (US$20,700) for the flagship Adventure Crew Cab version.
